FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS!
I HAVEN'T DANCED
BEFORE
Don't
panic - no previous dance experience required, otherwise
you wouldn't need the class! The majority are
non-dancers!!
I HAVE TWO LEFT
FEET!
This is a common statement usually made by a man! The
basics steps are very simple & most men are surprised
how easy it is to learn! They frequently say had they known
it was so easy they would have come sooner. It is not
uncommon for men to become more addicted to salsa than
women!
I
AM WORRIED ABOUT COMING ON MY OWN
Salsa
is open to everybody and lots of people attend
on their own; it's not just for "couples
only" although salsa is a partner dance. We are always on
hand to meet people and to introduce them to others,
so if attending on your own is a consideration for you
then please don't let it put you off. Any
nerves usually disappear within the first couple of
minutes of joining a class.
DO I NEED
TO BRING A DANCE PARTNER?
Salsa is informal, social dancing. Although you don't need
to bring a partner, it is a partner dance and to
facilitate this we rotate
students regularly during the class, so you will
not remain with the same person. The main reason
for rotating students (apart from being a fun and
sociable "ice breaker" and a good way to get to know
people) is to develop your ability as a dancer, thus
enabling you to dance with anyone.
Salsa clubs
often have a surplus of ladies
& most
classes can usually accommodate them. (Ladies without a
male partner tend to come with at least one female friend,
sometimes more, whilst men tend to bring a female partner
or alone. Thus, this can create a build-up of ladies over
the weeks). The ratio of male:female cannot be predicted.
DO I HAVE TO
BOOK IN ADVANCE OR CAN I JUST TURN UP?
Weekly
classes for Beginners and Improvers are on a "drop-in" pay
as you go basis so there's no need to pre-book. There are
no expensive joining or membership fees like the gym
and there's a chance to practice your dancing after
the lessons have finished. Simply come along and
have a go!
WHAT HAPPENS IN
CLASS?
At your initial
session you will be asked to fill in a simple registration
form so it's advisable to arrive about 15 minutes before
the advertised start time which gives you chance to settle
in, buy a drink from the bar and relax a little before the
teaching starts. (Please read the drinks policy on
Important Info page). There is always a body warm up for
everyone, no matter what level you are at. Basic
format for Beginners covers individual footwork, lead and
follow technique, simple partner work and musical
apreciation and timing. There is a syllabus so please ask
to see it if it is not on display. The next level expands
on what you have learned and incorporates more complicated
turn patterns, spins and shines. An understanding of
rhythm and timing is taught from the outset, you will learn
how to hear and count the different beats in a bar of music
so that you can clearly dance on time! You will not
be able to proceed to the Improver level until you can
demonstrate the relevant basic moves to a satisfactory
level. This ensures consistency in learning, avoids any
un-necessary hold ups in class and does impede the progress
of those who have paid for a class at the next
level.
HOW
LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN?
People
learn at different rates and progress depends not only on
how quickly you pick things up, but also on how many
classes you do each week & how many hours you practice
in between classes. Staying after the class for
practice & social dancing will also help you to
progress. Everybody has their own learning rate; it's not a
race or competition! Your teacher will discuss your
progress with you and advise. The main focus is on having
fun with like minded people & to enjoy the process of
learning to dance!!
HOW DO I
PROGRESS?
There is a syllabus to follow for both level i & level
2 classes which will give you a very good foundation. When
there are enough dancers ready to progress, then special
workshops/classes are arranged. Discounts for salsa
weekenders/holidays are also negotiated. Professional
teachers are booked for Friday & Sat party
nights/events which will also enable you to take your
dancing to the next level(s) Salsaparami works closely with
& supports other teachers & their events.
Information/lfyers are generally available either in
classes. via email or on Facebook. Please remember to try
& give something back by continuing to support
salsaparami & your own local club! USE IT OR LOSE
IT!
WHAT
SHOULD I WEAR?
Ideally
clothes should permit freedom of
movement, be cool and comfortable to
wear. The majority of people wear casual attire,
dressing up more for the party events. Check out the
pictures in the gallery pages!
WHAT
ABOUT SHOES?
Footwear
is very important. If you own a pair of dance shoes
or dance trainers then you are up and running already;
however, if you don't please read the information on the
SHOES page!
